Gray Middle school opened in August, 1994. Gray was dedicated to Gayle Hamilton on September 11, 1994. You may be wondering why this school was dedicated to Gayle and not anyone else? You see it all started when Gayle graduated Northern Kentucky with a master’s and bachelor’s degree in education. During 1979 she married Michael Gray. Gayle worked as a teacher at Cay wood Elementary school in Edge wood, KY for 5 years. She also worked as a substitute teacher in Boone county for a year, and then she took a full-time position at Conner Middle School in Hebron, KY for 4 years teaching sixth grade science. However, in 1992 Gayle was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer. Unfortunately the disease had already spread to Gayle’s liver. She was told that she would only live for six months. Gayle was determined to beat this disease and spread the most time with her family.
In May, 1993 Gayle’s family was told that she would most likely not make it through this week. On June 10, 1993 Gayle fell into a coma. The next day June 11, 1993, Gayle passed away with her family and friends by her side. You see in 1993, several classmates of Gayle’s high school started the Gayle Hamilton Gray Scholarship committee. The committee gives an annual scholarship to a senior at Conner High school. This committee also collected votes at the Boone county fair in order to have the new middle school named in her honor. Gayle is missed by everyone who knew her. She is honored for her bravery, determination, and her education. You may still be wondering why the name of the school is Gayle Gray Middle school and not Gayle Hamilton Middle school. The thing is when she got married her last name changed to Gray which is why the school is named after her new last name and not her maiden name. I had no idea that Gayle Gray middle school had so much history behind it’s name.
